iOS 18 is the upcoming eighteenth major release of Apple's iOS operating system for the iPhone.[2][3][4][5] It was revealed at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). It is the direct successor to iOS 17, and was announced alongside watchOS 11, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. As with every release since iOS 4, updates are available at no additional cost to users.

Being the successor to iOS 17, iOS 18 saw a developer beta released shortly after WWDC. Public betas will occur in July[original research?], and the operating system will be publicly released in September 2024[citation needed].

System features[edit]

Artificial intelligence[edit]

Apple will catch up to other companies with AI, spending US$1 billion a year on research and large language models. AI will mainly be used on device, with more complicated requests being sent to be processed on servers.[citation needed] Apple Intelligence is only supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.[6]

Messages[edit]

iOS 18 will support Rich Communication Services (RCS) on supported conversations, including support for read receipts and higher quality multimedia sharing. As with SMS, it will be designated with green message bubbles and buttons to distinguish it from full iMessage conversations (blue).[7][8]

Siri[edit]

Siri has been rebuilt from the ground up, and will be incorporating large language models (LLMs) to make shortcut integrations more accessible.[9][10] Rumors suggest that Siri will have better conversation capabilities and improved personalization.[citation needed] According to Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, the new Siri will boost Siri and Artificial intelligence by Apple by miles, stated in Worldwide Developers Conference 2024. The new Siri will launch in fall of 2024, with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia in the same time period.

Photos[edit]

iOS 18 includes a redesign of the Photos app.[11]

Home Screen[edit]

iOS 18 allows users to customize the icon color as well as the icon position on the Home Screen.[12] Previous iOS versions required icons to snap to a grid that did not allow gaps.

Supported devices[edit]

All iPhones that supported iOS 17 also support iOS 18. However, there are varying levels of support depending on the device's system-on-chip (SoC).

iPhones with an A12 Bionic SoC, which includes the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, and those with an A13 Bionic SoC, such as the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, and the second-generation SE, have limited support for iOS 18.

In contrast, iPhones with an A14 Bionic SoC and later models, including the iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max, receive full support for iOS 18.

However, the new Apple Intelligence functions require an A17 Pro SoC or later, which is only available on the most recent iPhone models, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.[13][14]

iPhones that support iOS 18 are as follows.[15][16][17]
